Escape rooms compressed physical searching into sixty minutes. Early CD-ROM adventures used inventory puzzles. Both influenced browser mysteries but often relied on click combinations instead of natural language.

Why the Format Persists

Humans like closed questions with moral weight: who broke the rule, who pays, who lied. Whodunits package that into a game. Technology changes; the appetite does not.
