On the fifteenth night, men claiming to be bandits burst through the manor gate. By morning Mori Hakunen lies dead in a tiny mountain-shrine cabin, beheaded before a bronze mirror. The officials blame bandits. You do not.

Inside the house, the eldest son repeats what he hears hours too late, the second son keeps the mine's real books, the second wife holds the inner court silent, and the sharp-eyed daughter watches from her sickroom. Search the rooms, read the room-swap ledger, and take the staged raid apart one detail at a time.

The setting

Taisho 5 (1916), the coal town of Changyang. Mori Hakunen built his manor from mine wealth, then locked his family inside a crooked feng-shui scheme — a bed that clashes with the door, a room built over buried "yin water," and meals where kin must address each other by deliberately wrong parent titles.

The suspects

Mori Keimei — Eldest Son
Twenty-five, slow to answer and quick to smile, he repeats people's words back hours later like an echo that took the long way home. He knows the house's title rules best of all.

Mori Ketsu — Second Son
Twenty-three, and the one who runs the fortune's real machinery: the mine office, the cart manifests, the inspectors who need entertaining. Capable, calm, and airtight.

Saito — Second Wife
Married in at eighteen to settle a debt. She is the still center of the inner court — dissolving trouble before it reaches the study, swallowing the humiliation of the wrong-title rule.

Mori En — Daughter
Twenty-one, the first wife's child, and the sharpest eyes in the manor. Long illness has made her a watcher: who moves at night, which door still opens after lights-out, which ledger names sit wrong.

Crime scenes you can search

Mountain Shrine Cabin
A 2.5m-square wooden cabin with a mountain-god altar and a bronze mirror facing the door. Mori Hakunen was beheaded here; embers and burnt paper remain, and there are no bandit boot prints.

Room One (Bed-Clash)
The bed faces the door directly — the room the feng-shui master said would invert its occupant's kinship. The eldest son sleeps here by house law.

Room Three (Yin-Water)
Built over a buried drainage channel. Saito's quarters by day; the swap ledger writes another name across many nights, with two sets of footprints toward the east passage.

Main Courtyard & Mine Office
The moon gate where the "bandit raid" struck — visible silver taken, hidden ledgers untouched — and the office where duplicate short-weighed pages hide beneath a floor tile.
