The case
In 3018, androids can hardly be told from humans. Nick — chairman of K-tek, the age's greatest android maker — is known as "Mysterious Nick": claiming to fear assassination by android resistance groups, he has not appeared in public since he was thirty-five. On August 25 he suddenly announced a press conference at his private villa.
The villa is a three-story house with a pointed roof and a basement, its front door always locked and its windows sealed shut. For the past six months, besides Nick and his android servants, two people have lived there: Lynn, a young engineer who claims to be Nick's illegitimate son, and Anna, K-tek's face model and, according to the press, Lynn's girlfriend.
At 10:00 on the morning of September 1, sirens sounded. In the basement the police found Nick's body: three gunshot wounds to the chest; a mural on the wall moved aside, and an empty hidden room behind it. A powerfully built stranger, shot in the shoulder, sat slumped beside the body; a frail, gray-haired middle-aged man was found in the garden; Lynn was on the ground floor and Anna on the third.
A noose hangs in the second-floor office and the shredder is stuffed with scraps; the basement air vent has been opened, and a pistol lies in the garden grass.
