Fair Play Means You Had the Clues

Classic mystery writers follow fair play: the attentive reader could solve it before the reveal. Missing Witness cases are authored the same way. If you feel stuck, you likely have fragments not yet placed on a timeline — not that the game hid a secret rule.

Contradiction Is the Engine

Two statements that cannot both be true point at lies, mistaken witnesses, or concealed identity. Train yourself to ask: "If A is true, does B become impossible?" That single habit solves more cases than guessing.

Red Herrings vs Noise

A red herring is authored to misdirect — suspicious behavior without guilt. Noise is your own premature theory. Suspend the first name you wrote down; try to convict your second pick with the same evidence. If only one survives, you are closer.

Borrow from Real Genres

Golden Age novels teach locked-room logic. Police procedurals teach chain of custody. Cozy mysteries teach motive in small grudges. Japanese honkaku puzzles teach mechanical tricks. You do not need to read them all — but recognizing the flavor tells you which questions to ask.

Session Habits

Play in two sittings if needed: night one for interviews and searches, night two for organize and accuse. Keep a scratch note of names and times outside the app if you like paper. The best solo detectives treat the browser tab like a case folder, not a race.
