AI Games You Can Talk To: How Conversational Play Actually Works

For thirty years, talking to a game character meant choosing from a list. Three options appeared, you picked one, the character said the thing attached to it. Every conversation you could ever have was written in advance.

Games where you type or say whatever you want, and the character answers, are now a real category. They're also a category where the gap between the good ones and the demos is enormous β€” and the difference isn't the language model. It's what the model is attached to.

This guide covers how these systems are actually built, what "memory" means when a game advertises it, the checklist for telling a game from a chat window, and where the current landscape stands.

The three architectures

Almost every "AI game you can talk to" is one of three things. They feel similar for the first five minutes and completely different after an hour.

1. Open-ended companion chat

A character with a persona, a chat box, and no goal. Character.AI is the dominant example, and there are dozens of others.

What it's good at: unlimited breadth. The character will engage with anything, in any direction, forever.

What it isn't: a game. There's no win condition, no failure state, and no fact of the matter about the world. If you ask what happened in the garden last Tuesday, the answer is generated to be plausible, and it may be a different answer next time.

That's not a criticism of the format β€” it's a companion product and it's very good at being one. It matters only because the marketing language overlaps heavily with actual games, and players who want a game are frequently disappointed by one of these.

2. LLM-driven NPCs inside a simulation

A conventional game β€” a village, a life sim, a strategy layer β€” where the characters' dialogue is generated rather than written, and what they say connects back to a real underlying state.

Suck Up! is the clearest small-scale example: you play a vampire trying to talk your way into houses, and the AI resident either invites you in or doesn't, based on what you actually said. There's a real win condition and the conversation is the mechanic. On the larger end, life sims and RPGs have begun shipping on-device or cloud NPC models β€” Krafton's inZOI uses NVIDIA's ACE technology to drive character behaviour, and NPC-model middleware is now being pitched to studios broadly.

What it's good at: conversation as a genuine verb. Persuasion, deception, bluffing, and negotiation become things you do, not menu items.

What to check: whether the conversation changes the simulation, or just describes it. If the NPC can be talked into anything but the world state never moves, you have a chat window painted onto a game.

3. Authored story with an AI performance layer

A fixed story, written in advance, where the AI's job is to perform the characters rather than invent the plot. The truth of the world is settled before you arrive; the model handles how each character answers in the moment.

This is the architecture behind AI mystery and detective games, including the cases on this site. The killer, the timeline and the evidence are authored. The AI plays the suspects, which means you can ask them anything β€” including things no writer anticipated β€” and get an answer that's consistent with what that character knows and is willing to admit.

What it's good at: the combination that's otherwise impossible β€” freedom of expression with a real answer at the end. You can interrogate however you like, and there is still something to be right or wrong about.

What it gives up: the plot doesn't go anywhere you take it. If you want the story to branch based on your choices, this isn't that.

Text-adventure systems like AI Dungeon sit at the opposite end: the model improvises the world as well as the dialogue, which produces limitless freedom and no fixed truth. Which of those you want is the single most important question when picking an AI game.

What "memory" actually means

Every product in this space advertises memory. It means at least four different things, in ascending order of how much work it's doing:

1. Context window. The model can see the last N thousand words of your conversation. Cheap, universal, and it silently forgets the beginning of a long session. Most "our characters remember you" claims are this.

2. Summarised history. Old conversation is compressed into a summary that stays in context. Better β€” it survives long sessions β€” but it's lossy, and what gets kept is decided by another model.

3. Retrieval over stored facts. Conversations are stored and searched, so relevant past exchanges get pulled back in when they matter. This is what produces the genuinely uncanny moment where a character brings up something from three sessions ago.

4. Structured world state. The important things aren't in text at all β€” they're in a database. Character X knows fact Y. Item Z is in room W. The relationship score is 3. The model reads that state rather than remembering it.

The fourth is the only one that makes a character reliably consistent, and it's the one that requires real engineering rather than a longer prompt. It's also why authored games can outperform open-ended ones on coherence despite being far less flexible: their state is small, explicit and correct.

How to test which one you're looking at, in about four minutes:

  • Tell a character something distinctive. Change the subject for ten exchanges. Refer back to it obliquely.
  • Ask two characters the same factual question about the world. Do they agree?
  • Ask a character something they should refuse to answer. Do they refuse, or do they helpfully invent?

That third test is the most revealing. A model with no world state will not say "I don't know" β€” it will produce something plausible, because that's what it's for. In a mystery, an AI suspect who invents an answer to a question they have no information about has destroyed the puzzle.

The five checks before you spend time on one

1. Is there a fixed truth? Can the game be wrong? If nothing you're told is more true than anything else, there's nothing to solve and no reason to pay attention.

2. Is there a win condition? Not necessarily winning and losing β€” but a state that counts as having done the thing. Without one, sessions end when you get bored rather than when you're finished, and that's a different feeling entirely.

3. Do the characters have limits? Good AI characters refuse, deflect, get annoyed, lie, and don't know things. A character who answers every question fully and pleasantly is a helpful assistant wearing a costume.

4. Does what you say change anything? Try being rude. Try lying. Try telling a character what someone else said. If the world is identical afterwards, conversation is decoration.

5. Does it hold up over an hour? Almost everything in this space is impressive for ten minutes. The failure modes β€” repetition, forgetting, tonal drift, the model agreeing with whatever you last said β€” all show up between minute twenty and minute sixty. Judge on the second half.

Why mysteries fit this technology unusually well

Most game genres get less from conversational AI than you'd expect. In a shooter, talking isn't the verb. In a strategy game, dialogue is flavour. In an open-ended RPG, unlimited conversation actively works against a plot the designers need you to follow.

Detective fiction is the exception, for three structural reasons.

Interrogation is already the gameplay. In every mystery ever written, the core loop is asking people questions and comparing answers. That was previously impossible to model well β€” dialogue trees can't anticipate the question you actually want to ask, and the good question is always the specific one about the fourteen minutes between 9:33 and 9:47.

A fixed solution is a feature, not a limitation. The genre requires an authored truth. So the biggest weakness of generative systems β€” that they'll invent whatever's plausible β€” is fixed by the thing mysteries need anyway. The AI performs; it doesn't decide.

Lying is a legitimate character behaviour. In most games, an NPC saying something false is a bug. In a mystery it's the entire point, and it's the one place where a model's fluency at producing convincing-but-untrue statements is exactly the desired output β€” as long as what they lie about is authored.

The current landscape

Broadly, as of August 2026:

Companion and roleplay chat. Character.AI and its many competitors. Enormous audiences, no game structure. Choose these if you want conversation, not a puzzle.

Improvised text adventure. AI Dungeon is the long-running example β€” the model generates the world as you go. Total freedom, no fixed truth, no way to be right.

Conversation-as-mechanic games. Suck Up! is the reference point for a small game built entirely around persuading generative NPCs. This category is growing and is where the most interesting design work is happening.

AI NPCs in mainstream games. Life sims and RPGs adding generated dialogue on top of conventional systems, with inZOI among the more visible examples. Expect this to become normal rather than a feature.

What to expect the first time

Two things surprise most people.

You will under-ask. Years of dialogue menus have trained everyone to expect three options, so the first instinct is to type something generic β€” "tell me about the victim" β€” and get a generic answer. The format rewards specificity ruthlessly. "You said you left at nine. The gate log says the gate opened at 9:41. What were you doing for forty minutes?" gets somewhere; "any thoughts?" does not.

You will over-trust. Fluent text reads as authoritative, and characters in a mystery are lying to you on purpose. Write down what people claim rather than what you feel you learned, and check claims against each other rather than against your impression.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between an AI game and a chatbot with a character?

A game has a fixed state you can be wrong about and a condition that counts as finishing. A chatbot has a persona and a text box. Both can be enjoyable; only one can be solved. The quickest test is to ask whether the system could tell you that you're wrong.

Do AI games remember what you said?

Some do, in the limited sense that recent conversation stays in context. Fewer maintain a structured record of what each character knows and what you've established. Run the four-minute test above β€” mention something distinctive, change the subject, come back to it.

Are AI games free?

Many have free tiers, and pricing changes constantly. Browser-based ones typically let you start without installing anything; several also let you begin without an account. Can the AI decide I'm right when I'm not?

In an authored game, no β€” the solution exists independently of the conversation, so an accusation is checked against it. In an improvisational system, yes, and that's the central weakness of the format for puzzle purposes: a model asked whether your theory is correct will tend to find it correct.
