What You Are Playing

Missing Witness is a browser-based solo detective game. You investigate authored murder cases by talking to AI suspects, searching locations, and writing a closing theory. An AI judge scores your reasoning against a hidden answer key — the same fairness model as commercial boxed whodunits, but without needing four friends and a free evening.

Step 1 — Case File & Opening

Each case opens with a synopsis and Case File summary: victim, setting, and suspects in broad strokes — no spoilers. Tap More for extended opening narrative that sets tone like the first chapter of a detective novel. Press Start to hear opening statements from every suspect. Note contradictions immediately: who sounds rehearsed, who changes details, who refuses a straight answer.

Step 2 — Interrogate in Group or Direct

Type questions in the group channel to address everyone, or tap a portrait to @mention one suspect. Group chat mimics a crowded drawing room — not everyone may reply. Directed questions force a single character to answer, like pulling someone aside at a live mystery party. There is no hidden button path; language is the interface.

Step 3 — Search & Organize

Under Investigation, click unscouted rooms. The judge extracts physical clues from each scene and adds them to your board. Use Organize Clues to merge testimony with evidence into a timeline. Strong players revisit rooms after learning a new name or time — real detectives do not treat first impressions as final.

Step 4 — Submit Your Theory

Write a complete accusation: killer, time, place, method, motive, and why others are innocent. The judge applies a weighted rubric per case and reveals the official story. Progress saves locally per case in your browser; switch cases from the dropdown anytime.

Guests, Accounts & Limits

Guests receive a limited number of free questions per case before sign-in is required. Accounts track usage; investigation progress stays on your device. English plays at / and Chinese at /zh with separate save keys so languages do not mix progress.
