Authored vs Accidental
A red herring is deliberate: suspicious behavior without guilt. Accidental noise is your own favorite suspect. Test herrings by asking whether the behavior requires guilt or only looks dramatic in opening statements.
The Access Test
Herrings emote; killers often need logistics. If your top suspect has motive and drama but no path to the key object or room, keep searching.
Second-Suspect Drill
Spend fifteen minutes building a case against your second pick using the same clues. If only one suspect survives access + motive + timing, you are near submission quality.
